Classic mode is 30 floors: five areas, then the same five again with new names and tougher enemies, until Armored Mewtwo on floor 30. Here is what each area throws at you and which Pokémon types to bring.
Ask the CoachTell it your Pokémon, your items and your floor: it says what to take, which deal to make and how to beat the boss.

The card at the start of each floor shows its types and how your team fares (here Pikachu in Viridian Forest).

Floors 6 to 29 reuse these five areas with new names (Shadow Forest, Lunar Grotto, Cursed Tower, Ruined Mansion, Cerulean Abyss) and their enemy mixes. After floor 30 you can keep going in endless mode: ×5 difficulty to floor 40, then +×5 every 10 floors, every floor with its own scenery.
